Color masterbatch - systematic work

Nowadays, masterbatches are playing an important role in plastic coloring industry. Color masterbatch production is a systematic work, from formulation, processing, performance testing to final application. It can not only give colorful plastic products, improve the value of commodities, improve some properties of plastics, but also give special optical properties of materials. To obtain high quality masterbatch, we should have a comprehensive knowledge of material, machine, and process parameters (temperature, pressure, residence time).

Processing Path


At present, there are two processes for producing a masterbatch: premix and split-feed.The most widely used processing technology is co-rotating twin-screw extruder. The main advantage is the optimum distribution and dispersion of additives into the carrier resin, ensuring high quality of masterbatch.

Design the extrusion process

The choice of pigments, resins, filler and additives determines the processing path.
For heat or shear sensitive pigments, such as effect pigments, split-feed process will be essential.

slit-feed: For color-pigment powder loadings higher than 20% and anywhere up to 80%,
premix: no more than 15% of a color-pigment powder

In compounding,materials are mixed and melted—generally in an extruder of some type—then pelletized. During this process,we should pay much attention to temperature,pressure and residence time. Reliable processing conditions result in stable quality of final product.
Viewed as a series of operation units,the design of twin screw extruders proviedes advantage towards other processing technology. Segmented screws and barrels enable process engineer to configure the extruder,optimizing the process  and as a result , the properties of final product is attainable.
Pigments also determine the way of pelletizing:
strand pelletizing: color masterbatch, white masterbatch
underwater pelletizing: white or black masterbatch
