A devolatilization extruder

is a specialized type of extrusion equipment used in the processing of polymers to remove volatile components from the material. Volatile components can include solvents, monomers, or other substances that are present in the polymer melt. The devolatilization process is crucial for achieving specific quality and performance characteristics in the final polymer product.

Working principle of a devolatilizaiton extruder

Here's an introduction of the devolatilization extruder and its operation:

  1. Purpose:

The primary purpose of a devolatilization extruder is to remove volatile substances from a polymer melt. This is important in applications where the presence of these volatiles could negatively impact the end product's properties.

  2. Design

Devolatilization extruders are designed with features that facilitate the removal of volatile components. They often have multiple sections, including a feeding zone, a melting zone, a devolatilization or degassing zone, and a discharge zone.

  3. Process

The polymer material, which may contain volatile components, is fed into theextruder through a hopper.

The material undergoes a melting process in the extruder, converting it into a molten state.

In the devolatilization or degassing zone, the extruder applies vacuum or other degassing methods to remove the volatile components from the molten polymer. This is typically achieved by creating low-pressure conditions, causing the volatiles to vaporize and be drawn out of the material.

The remaining devolatilized polymer is then discharged from the extruder.

  4. Temperature and Pressure Control:

Precise control of temperature and pressure is critical in the devolatilization process. The extruder is equipped with temperature control zones to maintain specific temperature profiles throughout the different sections. Pressure is controlled to facilitate the removal of volatiles.

  5. Applications

Devolatilization extruders are commonly used in the production of high-performance polymers, where the presence of residual solvents or monomers can adversely affect the material's properties. Industries such as plastics, rubber, and chemical processing may utilize devolatilization extruders for specific applications

  6. Benefits

The use of a devolatilization extruder allows manufacturers to achieve precise control over the composition of the polymer, ensuring that volatile components are removed to meet desired quality standards.

Overall, devolatilization extruders play a crucial role in enhancing the purity and performance of polymers in various industrial applications. The growing demand for low VOC and residue polymers drive us to design and optimized the extruder system for devolatilization. With our chief technological officer, who has 40-year experience in polymer compounding field,Jieya team continously creates an innovative solution for our customers.
